UU.). En 1971 concluyó su doctorado en Economía por la Universidad de París y trabajó como economista para la Organización Internacional del Café hasta 1973</SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: silver; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt"><FONT face="Arial Unicode MS">.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></p>

Posteriormente, fue elegido como miembro de la cooperativa internacional<FONT color=#cccccc> <B><U><A id=link_0 title=http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agencia_Magnum href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agencia_Magnum"><FONT color=#999999><B><U>Magnum Photos</U></B></FONT></A></U></B></FONT><FONT color=#999999>,</FONT> y estuvo en dicha asociación desde 1979 hasta 1994. Desde su domicilio en París viajó para cubrir noticias como las guerras de Angola y del Sáhara Español, la toma de rehenes israelíes en Entebbe, el intento de asesinato del presidente estadounidense Ronald Reagan, y también empezó a trabajar en proyectos documentales más profundos y personales.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></p>

A mediados de los ochenta, colaboró durante quince meses con la <B>ONG</B> francesa Médicos sin Fronteras en la región africana del Sahel, afectada por una gran sequía, y <B>creó <BIG><B>Sahel: L'homme en dÉtresse</B> </BIG></B>(1986, Sahel: el fin del camino), un documento sobre la dignidad y resistencia del pueblo sometido al mayor sufrimiento. Desde 1986 hasta 1992 se centró en <B><BIG><B>Workers</B> </BIG></B>(1993, Trabajadores), un documental fotografiado en 26 países sobre el final de la mano de obra masiva. Después de <B><BIG><B>Terra: Struggle of the landless</B> </BIG></B>(1997, Terra: la lucha de los sin tierra), un documental sobre los que luchan por reclamanar su tierra en Brasil, su país natal, publicó <B><BIG><B>Migrations</B></BIG></B> (Migraciones) y <B><BIG><B>Children</B></BIG></B> (Niños) en el 2000, sobre las duras condiciones de vida de los desplazados, refugiados y emigrantes de 41 países.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></p>

Instituciones de todo el mundo le han concedido los principales premios fotográficos y reconocimientos por sus logros. En 1994 fundó su propia agencia de prensa,<BIG><B>Amazonas Images</B></BIG>, que lo representa a él y a su trabajo. Vive en París con su esposa y colaboradora Lelia Wanick Salgado, quien diseñó la mayoría de sus libros. Tienen dos hijos.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></p>
